he Turning Grille Cipher itself is explained in several books and websites (see link below). This page is intended to explain the program's functionality and how to use it.
To understand it you are supposed to know how the cipher works. Maybe you will find an additional explanation here later.

The main window should be rather self-explanatory. On the left you have two text areas, where you can type in a plaintext or a ciphertext. Of course its also possible to load and save these texts using the according menu items. On the right you see the grille. Click on any field of the grille to punch a hole (blue) or to close it again (grey). The toolbar gives you the opportunity to increase or decrease the grille's size and to shuffle the holes. You can rotate the grille as well, but be aware of the fact that this has no effect on the encryption. There also is an undo-button in case you made a mistake preparing your special grille. After preparing your grille you can either encrypt or decrypt your text by clicking the right menu. If your text is to short, a dialog appears to help you filling it up to the right length.

In case you want to decrypt a message without knowing the right grille you can use the Brute-Force Analysis. Just load the text into the ciphertext area and click the Brute-Force Analysis item in the ciphertext menu. After that, the Brute-Force-Dialog appears, where you have to load a word file (see Download) and to set the size of the grille. The trigger parameter defines, how many characters have to be "correct" (can be found as words in the word file). According results appear in the result list at the bottom. The higher the trigger parameter is, the less results you will get and vice versa. Click start and wait for the analysis to finish. After that you can select a row in the result list and then click the Select button to load the according grille and the plaintext into the main window.
